We are pleased to announce the Mary Jane Dockeray Scholarship sponsored by the Regional Math and Science Center at Grand Valley State University. This is a named scholarship in honor of Mary Jane Dockeray, founding curator of the Blandford Nature Center in Grand Rapids.
At least two $1,500 scholarships are awarded annually to graduating seniors who plan to pursue a career in science. Applicants must be seniors from public or private schools within the Kent, Ottawa, or Muskegon Intermediate School Districts. The recipients are selected on the basis of academic achievements and potential for succeeding in a career in science. Financial need is not a factor in the selection process. In April, recipients will be notified by phone and non-recipients will be notified by U.S. mail.
Scholarship Amount: The scholarship of $1,500 is to be applied toward tuition, fees, or other educational costs at a two or four-year college or university.
Eligibility: Any graduating senior from a high school within the Kent, Ottawa, or Muskegon Area Intermediate School Districts who is pursuing a career in science at a two or four-year college or university is eligible to apply.
How to Apply: Please read carefully. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Submit this application with a personal essay; have an official high school transcript (with ACT scores and cumulative GPA); and two recommendation forms submitted in support of the application. Note: One recommendation must be from a teacher or administrator and one from someone not connected with your high school.
Personal Essay Information: Your personal essay should include personal information about yourself and your educational and career goals. However, do not merely list activities, honors, and awards. Instead, help the selection committee understand your uniqueness. To accomplish this, it would be a good idea to write in the first person (use "I"). Try to make yourself come to life as an individual, a student, and a future member of your chosen profession. Remember, the committee has to read many applications. You must make the committee understand why it should choose you for the scholarship rather than someone else whose record might appear almost identical to yours. Your essay weighs heavily in the committee's decision.
Your application and all supporting documentation must be received by mail, fax, email, or electronically by March 2, 2015.
