GVSU Offers Health Professions Summer Day Camp for Middle School Students

Do you know a student who is interested in the Health Professions as a career and wants to have fun learning about them this summer?

sHaPe (Summer Health Activities and Professions Exploration) is a one-week day program introduction to the Health Professions for boys and girls currently in 7th and 8th grades.

Students in sHaPe have the opportunity to study anatomy, physiology, epidemiology, and personal health and fitness.  They explore the professions of clinical lab science, nursing, occupational therapy, physical therapy, physician assistant, radiation therapy, sonography, speech pathology, sports medicine, and therapeutic recreation.

Program activities include exercising in fun ways, making nutritious meals, collecting data in a laboratory setting, using modern medical equipment, understanding different types of therapies for various injuries and disabilities, and experiencing a field trip to Spectrum Health Butterworth Campus.

Sessions will be held at the GVSU Cook-DeVos Center for Health Services in downtown Grand Rapids.  The program will be held from 9:00am-4:00pm each day.  The Girls’ session will be held July 12-15, and the Boys’ session will be held July 19-22, 2010.
Participants must be between the ages of 12-15, entering the 8th or 9th grade in Fall 2010 and Michigan residents.  Preference will be given to students attending Grand Rapids Public Schools.

The camp is free and lunch is provided each day.  There is a $25.00 registration fee due upon acceptance to the program.  Scholarships are available.
