Fall Science Update-Call for Presenters

The Regional Math and Science Center is currently recruiting teachers, professors, and science consultants to present K-12 science sessions during the annual Fall Science Update.  This full-day conference will take place on Wednesday, November 17, 2010, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Eberhard Center, located on Grand Valley State University’s downtown Grand Rapids campus.

We welcome hour-long science sessions on current content information and teaching strategies in biology, chemistry, physics, Earth science, environmental science, physical science, and technology.  We also encourage sessions that will feature successful teaching strategies and tools for the classroom.  Opportunities for student learning adventures, both as field trips and/or classroom experiences, may also be presented.

This year’s event theme is “Science Teachers Facing the Future”.  Our keynote speaker is Dr. Sheila Tobias.  Tobias has made a science and an art of being a curriculum outsider. Neither a mathematician nor a scientist, she has tackled the question of why intelligent and motivated college students have specific difficulties in certain disciplines, particularly mathematics and science. From her work have come seven books on math-science teaching and learning.  Her latest book, Science Teaching as a Profession. Why it isn’t. How it Could Be, is being published in soft cover as an NSTA (National Science Teachers Association) book and is available from the NSTA website.

The deadline for presenter applications is Friday, May 28, 2010.  Please download a presentation form for the Fall Science Update on our
website or contact Margo Dill at (616) 331-2272 or dillm@gvsu.edu  for additional information.

The brochure for this year’s event will be mailed out to schools in early October 2010.
