This program LIB 100 and LIB 201 approved program will involve viewing part IV of the documentary series “Weight of the Nation” which seeks to explore the issue of obesity as well as it’s contributing factors and possible solutions.  Further, it examines the major driving forces causing the obesity epidemic, including agriculture and the changes in our food production, farming policy, economics, evolutionary biology and hunger, food marketing, racial and socioeconomic disparities, physical inactivity, American food culture, and the strong influence of the food and beverage industry. 

Following the viewing of the 55 minute segment, there will be small group discussion exploring strategies and identifying resources for attendees to consider.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Upon completion of this program participants will gain a better understanding of the scope of the obesity epidemic.
  • Upon completion of this program participants will understand why racial and socioeconomic disparities in obesity rates exist.
  • Upon completion of this program participants will be introduced to the changes that have taken place in American agriculture and food production over the last 30 years.
  • Upon completion of this program participants will understand how American farming policy affects small farmers, food availability, and food cost.
  • Upon completion of this program participants will understand what is contributing to the lack of physical activity in American culture.
  • Upon completion of this program participants will understand the influence of the food and beverage industry on American policy.
  • Upon completion of this program, participants will ain ideas for strategies that they can implement into their personal lives to improve overall health.
  • Upon completion of this program, participants will be given resources to utilize in order to help improve overall health.
