About

The Outdoor Adventures Summer Staff position is a fun and challenging part-time position that allows you to share your love of outdoor and adventure-based activities with the greater GVSU community. This spring/ summer position has an emphasis on staffing open hours and private group events at the Climbing Center and and added responsibility for taking a leadership role in facilitating an adventure camp for incoming freshman at the end of summer (Outdoor Orientation Programs or OOPs).  
This position will include a combination of regularly scheduled weekly shifts and as-needed shifts for private events. Some nights and weekends should be expected.

Qualifications / Requirements

Ideal applicants are passionate about leadership and have a sincere interest in growing an active community of people at GVSU who responsibly enjoy the outdoors. 

Required 

  • Current GVSU student with at least a Junior Status, and meets minimum enrollment requirements for employment 

  • Trained in belaying with an aperture style or assisted locking device 

  • Certified Adult CPR/ AED, and First Aid (1 semester grace period & certification opportunity provided) 

  • Comfort with camping and basic camping skills 

  • Personify the OA philosophy (mission, vision, & values) 

  • Passion for student development, leadership and teamwork 

Preferred 

  • Own personal climbing equipment: harness, shoes, belay device 

  • Climbing Wall Instructor certification (PCIA or similar, can be provided) 

  • Experience outdoor climbing and building top-rope anchors 

  • Experience with bike touring or group rides 

  • Previous outdoor leadership experience 

  • Pursuit of a career in an outdoor related field 

Responsibilities

General responsibilities include the following: 

  • Attend all staff training, meetings, and/or in-services 

  • Maintain the professional standard for delivery of programs and services 

  • Climbing Center operations 
        - Climber check-in 
        - Equipment issue 
        - Facility supervision
        - Maintain a clean and professional environment 
        - Obtain necessary certifications required for this position within the designated timeframe 

  • Lead adventure-based activities for OOPs participants 
        - Instruct basic outdoor technical skills (biking, climbing, camping, cooking) 
        - Facilitate team building and group development 
        - Lead group discussions and reflections 
        - Mentor group on select wellness topics 

  • Other duties as assigned
