Report nuisance or obscene phone calls to the Grand Valley State Department of Public Safety. All calls of a threatening nature should be reported immediately.

It is against Michigan State Law 750.540e to make harassing or obscene phone calls.

WHEN RECEIVING HARASSING OR ANNOYING CALLS:
HANG UP!!! - Don't slam the receiver down and admit to the caller that you are annoyed.
Don't talk, remember the only thing these callers want is an audience. Don't give them the satisfaction of talking.
Do not ask questions to attempt to find out who the person is.
Do not respond with smart or witty answers, this encourages their behavior.
Do not answer surveys - They are often pranks to find out personal information.

TYPES OF CALLS
HANG UP
If you receive back to back hang ups, take your phone of the hook for 5 minutes.

SILENT LINES
Hang up immediately if the caller does not respond when you answer.

OBSCENE CALLS
Hang up at the first utterance of an obscene word.

PRANK CALLS
Know who you are talking to. Hang up if the caller does not make identification to your satisfaction.
Ask who is calling.  Ask what number they are trying to reach.  Do not give out your name or number to callers.
Do not fall for sophisticated pranks which pose as surveys or doctor's offices and ask you personal information.
If unsure, ask for a return number to call the person back at.

DOCUMENTING THESE CALLS
Record the date and time
Type of call - Hang-up, threatening, obscene, nuisance
Voice - Male / Female, young / old, high / low, accent, intoxicated
Description of background noise
Was call coming from on or off campus (one-ring or two-rings)
