Your guide to West Michigan.

American Bank Accounts

You are welcome to open a bank account at the bank of your choice, but please take a look at the information below, which you may find helpful in guiding your decision.

  • When selecting your bank take into account that in the United States, using an ATM from a bank other than yours involves a fee. Therefore, it is more convenient to have an account with those banks that have a number of ATM machines that you can easily access.

  • There are five ATM machines on campus.  They are from two banks - Fifth Third Bank and Lake Michigan Credit Union.

  • During orientation, international students will have the opportunity to meet with representatives from the Fifth Third Bank in Standale to open a bank account.

  • Wire transfers are accepted by GVSU.  Please contact Kate Stoetzner by email: stoetznk@gvsu.edu for the proper account information.  *Do not plan to send by Western Union, as there isn't a convenient location to pick up the money.  For instructions on wire transfers, click here.
