His main research interests are in ethical theory and applied ethics, especially environmental ethics and medical ethics.  His most recent work focuses on what kinds of entities are worthy of moral consideration, including the considerability of animals, plants, ecosystems, and human fetuses and embryos.  In particular, he is concerned with what accounts for the harm of death and what types of entities can be harmed from death.  His publications include: “Two Arguments against Biological Interests” (Environmental Ethics, 2010), “Do Animals Have an Interest in Continued Life: In Defense of a Desire-Based Approach” (Environmental Ethics, 2009), and “Animals, Predators, the Right to Life, and the Duty to Save Lives” (Ethics and the Environment, 2009).
