Crime Alerts

6/24/08

We have experienced an increase in bike thefts on the Pew Campus. The thieves have been successful in cutting through the cable bike locks that are being used. It is recommended that if you are bringing your bike on campus that you use a U lock. These are made of hardened steal and are much harder to cut through.

If you see an individual loitering around any of the bike racks on campus, please notify us and we will check them out. We can be reached at 331-6677. Thank you in advance for your help.

This is the time of year that we see an increase in larcenies on campus. With the warm weather, it brings people out and about, increasing the number of people we have on campus that may or may not belong. Please be sure to keep your office doors locked, and valuables put away and out of site. Remind students to not leave their book bags and computers unattended. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us.

It has been brought to our attention that we have had an increase of pan handling on campus. If you have been approached by someone for money or a ride, either at DeVos or Eberhard, we would like you to report it to us.

Please do not give these people money, it only encourages their frequency. DO NOT ever give them a ride. You can direct them to our office for assistance.

This past weekend we had two laptops stolen. If you own a laptop, please be sure to either secure it in a locked cabinet or take them home with you. Laptops should never be left unsecured. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Crime Information

Security would like to remind you to keep your valuables out of sight in your vehicles
while parked. Also remember to lock your vehicles, but make sure you have your keys!

We have been informed by Grand Rapids Police Department of an increase in purse snatchings in the Downtown area.  While none of these incidents have occurred on the Pew Campus, we want to make everyone aware so that they may take proper precautions.  Even though they seem to be targeting purses, please keep in mind that these are grab and go crimes and they can target any type of bag which may include back packs or laptops.  Below are a couple of safety tips to help you as you come and go from campus.

1.  When ever possible, walk with someone else.
2.  Be aware of your surroundings.
3.  Walk with your head up, looking around.
4.  Secure your belongings on you as you walk.

If you have any questions, please feel free to call our office at 331-6677.
