May 22 May 8 March 10 March 10 Security AlertDate: July 31, 2009 The Grand Rapids Police Department has reported seeing a large and quick spike in larcenies from autos in the downtown and Westside parking lots. In approximately the past week, there have been several vehicles broken into in downtown ramps, on Ionia and in the lots off Ionia (North of I-196), in and around the YMCA lot, the dash lots, and other on street parking areas near nightclubs (Montes, The Intersection).
While no cars have been broken into in GVSU Lots/on GVSU property using this method, several students have been victimized while parking on city streets, and vehicles left unlocked in our lots have been targeted.
*CRIME PREVENTION TIPS*
· LOCK YOUR CAR and remove ANYTHING of value from the passenger compartment of the vehicle. WE CAN NOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH!
· Items of value include GPS units, IPODS, electronic chargers (because if there is a charger, there is probably a device nearby), laptop computers, money---yes even change, etc.
· Please make sure these types of items are secured in the trunk or better yet, take them with you.
· If you have a trunk release inside the car, anything in the trunk is at risk as well once the suspect gets into the passenger compartment.
· Locking the vehicle is only a start because most recently suspects are throwing rocks, bricks, and other items through the windows.
· We tend to think “It won’t happen to me,” but it can and does.
The primary method of operation for the thieves right now is to throw something through the passenger side window, reach in, and steal what is visible. Many of these break-ins are occurring in the downtown region and north Monroe in the mornings, from 6am to 12 noon, or there about. We still have them at night but the new ones to the north are mostly during the day. Please, Please, Please, remember to call the Grand Rapids Police Department or Pew Campus Security if you see someone suspicious in the lots or near cars. Owners do not usually hang around before they get in their cars and people that are doing something wrong tend to hang out and do a lot of looking around before they throw the rock. The number for Grand Rapids Police Dispatch is 456-3400 (as soon as the recording starts press 1 for English, 2 for Spanish, and 1 again to have an officer sent out) and Pew Campus Security can be reached at 331-6677.
The Grand Rapids Police did arrest subjects on two separate incidents on 7-27-09 (one in the 1300 block of Walker NW and the other in the lot of 129 Jefferson SE). Method of entry in these two cases is not consistent with the rock through the window larcenies. GRPD is not intending to imply that there is only one set of thieves in the area, as these larcenies can, and probably are being committed by multiple individual or groups.
Thank you for helping to educate our community on ways to reduce their chances of becoming a victim!
