Meet the Team

Joe B.

Joe Bitely

Assistant Director of Campus Recreation

Joe oversees the programs and services offered by the Outdoor Adventure Center and Climbing Center.  This includes planning and leading a variety of adventure-based workshops and trips for the University community.  Although he dabbles in many outdoor activities, most of his expertise and experience is in rock climbing.  Joe began climbing in 2003 while finishing a bachelor's degree from Western Michigan University in Recreation Management.  He spent a brief period as the manager of Climb Kalamazoo before being hired as GVSU's Climbing Center Manager in 2007.  He is a certified Wilderness First Responder, Red Cross First Aid/ CPR/ AED Instructor, PADI Open Water Diver, & hopes to add Single Pitch Climbing Guide to the list in the near future.  Some of his favorite adventures have included competing in the 24 Hours of Horseshoe Hell (rock climbing), SCUBA diving the reefs of Mexico, white water rafting the New River, & ice climbing the frozen waterfalls at the Pictured Rocks Lakeshore.

When not hanging out at the climbing wall, he can often be found at the bike shop tuning up the rental fleet.  Although Joe's experience with riding is limited, he enjoys it as a healthy, economical, & sustainable means of transportation & recreation. He is excited by the opportunity to grow the services and resources available for cyclists on GVSU's campus and plans to focus his available energy on GVSU achieving a Gold level status as a Bicycle Friendly University (awarded by the League of American Bicyclists).

An edited version of the film was shown at The Bicycle Film Festival at the Wealthy Theater in February 2010. A good week for Joe is 120 miles on the bike, and even if everything else is “going down the tubes,” the bicycle is the perfect refuge.
