Beckman Scholars Program Faculty Mentor: Dawn Hart, Ph.D.

Dr. Dawn Clifford Hart is an Associate Professor in the Department of Cell & Molecular Biology. Research in her lab focuses on when and where cells physically divide. Errors in cell division are associated with many developmental defects and diseases, such as cancer. When cells divide, a protein rich ring structure assembles, then constricts to force a single cell to separate into two cells. Dr. Clifford Hart’s lab employs microscopy, molecular biology and biochemical approaches to understand regulatory mechanisms involved in anchoring the contractile ring at the cell division site.

Dr. Clifford Hart received her BS from the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) and obtained her Ph.D. in Cancer Biology from Wayne State University & the Karmanos Cancer Institute (Detroit). She began her work on cell division as a post-doctoral fellow at Vanderbilt University (Nashville) prior to joining GVSU in 2008.
