OSH Students host a Noise Control Demo for Engineering Day

On February 15, 2024, OSH students attended Engineering Day at the Grand Rapids Public Museum. Almost 500 students and Museum guests stopped to explore the various tables set up for the day.

At the Occupational Safety and Health table, we set up a noise demonstration! Using jingle bells, pom-poms, and plastic ornaments, students were educated on the importance of noise control and hearing protection in the workplace. This helped explain how materials can help control noise with hands-on experience.

Students were provided a jingle bell and a plastic ornament and then asked to select which “insulating materials” they would pack around their jingle bell to make it as quiet as possible! Using pom-poms, crinkled paper, and pasta the students could experiment to figure out what worked and didn’t!

Using our noise dosimeter, we also demonstrated noise levels to the students by letting them yell and seeing how loud the yell was!
