OSH Students and Faculty Deliver First Responder Training
October 17, 2016
OSH department students and faculty assisted in the delivery of first responder training on photovoltaic fires. Over 50 firefighters from several municipalities gathered on the Allendale campus to learn to about the differences in emergency response to residential and commercial fires with the increasing presence of photovoltaic power generation systems installation. The emergency personal learn how photovoltaic systems operate, how to recognize installations, the hazards presented by photovoltaic systems, and how to respond to a fire emergency in which a photovoltaic system is present.
The material was presented by GVSU engineering alumni, Aaron Bazen, OSH faculty Dave Huizen, and Allendale Fire Inspector Dave Pelton. The presentation was researched and developed by OSH students, Jake Huffman and Justin Mitchell. The presentations were followed up with a hands-on demonstration of the PCEC solar trailer and a tour of the GVSU Solar Garden by Consumer’s Energy Personnel. David Cox, GVSU Facilities Safety Manager, organized the event and supervised the OSH students in the creation of the presentation. The training was made possible through a grant from Consumers Energy in conjunction with the solar garden installation.
