Latinos Millennials to be the Voice of Change

Andres Chavez

Date and Time

Friday, March 24, 2017 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM

Description

Andrés Chávez was raised in the farm worker movement founded by his grandfather, the late labor leader and civil rights activist - Cesar Chávez. Andres is the youngest son of Socorro and Paul Chavez (Cesar Chavez’s middle son).  He grew up participating in social justice activities such as rallies, picket lines, demonstrations, union conventions and political campaigns, including those for immigration reform.  Andres is a senior at California State University, Bakersfield, majoring in public policy and administration.  Currently, he works at the HEP and CAMP, educational programs which serve students from migrant or seasonal farmworker families. He served as senior aide and internship coordinator for the Emilio J. Huerta congressional campaign in Kern and Kings counties. Prior to this, Andres was a curriculum specialist with the Cesar Chavez Foundation, writing curriculum for the Si Se Puede Learning Center, an after-school academic tutoring and character education programs for the children of residents at the Foundation’s forty two affordable housing communities in four states.

Andres will speak about the life and legacy of his grandfather and the plight of farm workers then and transition to how Latinx millennials can be the voice of change in this 21st century.  Following his talk is a meet and greet reception with light hors doeuvres.
