Description

Through the years, Dr. Marylou Olivarez Mason struggled through poverty and discrimination as a child migrant worker, woman, Latina, and single parent.  She has accomplished noteworthy achievements including becoming founder of Michigan Hispanic Heritage Month, serving with both Democratic and Republican governors.  Dr. Olivarez became the first woman to be named executive director of the Michigan Commission on Spanish-Speaking Affairs by Gov. James J. Blanchard, and founding of Advocates for Latino Student Advancement in Michigan Education.  Dr. Olivarez was honored as Hispanic Women of the Year in 2000 by the National Hispana Leadership Institute in Washington, DC. in 2015.

1.  Upon completion of this program, attendees will have gained new awareness about the history and social impact of Hispanic migrant workers and their families.

1.Upon completion of this program, attendees will have gained new insight into how communities can work together to implement social change. 

Oppression/Discrimination (LIB 201)
1.Upon completion of this program, attendees will have increased knowledge about the history of discrimination and marginalization of immigrant families and how these structures continue in today’s society.
