Mary Isca Pirkola joined Grand Valley's News and Information Services office in 2005. She has enjoyed a diverse career in communications for more than 30 years. With a bachelor's degree in communications from Michigan State University and a journalism teaching minor, she has utilized her skills to teach, and work in advertising, marketing, public relations and journalism, with nonprofit organizations, media outlets and corporate and educational institutions.

An advocate for the arts, she serves on the Fall Arts Celebration committee and administers the Grand Valley Arts Calendar. She also served as a docent with the Grand Rapids Art Museum for more than five years, and served on the first Grand Rapids Community Reading Project committee. She continues to promote the arts and humanities at Grand Valley and foster community involvement in the enjoyment of the arts.
