Samuel Gould holds the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Percussion Performance from Michigan State University. As a percussionist, Dr. Gould performs in a wide variety of musical settings ranging from orchestral to popular music and from improvised to various world music traditions. He has performed with the Battle Creek Symphony Orchestra, West Michigan Symphony Orchestra and Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra and has also served as a modern dance accompanist at Grand Valley State University and Michigan State University. Dr. Gould currently performs with his own group Dziro Mbira a group dedicated to performing traditional mbira and drum music from Zimbabwe. Research interests include: the music of sub-Saharan Africa, Frame Drumming traditions around the world and Performance-Based pedagogy in the classroom.
