Robert Byrens

Robert Byrens has been on the faculty at Grand Valley State University since 1992. He is currently an artist faculty member and collaborative pianist serving as vocal coach. Mr. Byrens was formerly a member of the string faculty, leading the viola studio and performing with the Perugino String Quartet. Mr. Byrens also serves as rehearsal pianist and vocal coach for Opera Grand Rapids, a position he has held since 1994. He acted as the Associate Artistic Director for the Chamber Music Festival of Saugatuck from 1998 to 2008. He was formerly the principal violist with the South Bend and Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestras, and has performed with the Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Lansing, and Battle Creek Symphonies.

Mr. Byrens received his musical training at the American Boychoir School, the Geneva Conservatory, Westminster Choir College, Indiana University at South Bend, and is a summa cum laude graduate of Olivet College. His principle teachers include Dalton Baldwin, Ivan Frazier, and Ronald Gorevic. He has performed in vocal master classes with Elly Ameling, Gerard Souzay, Phyllis Curtin, and Jessye Norman.
