Beth Gibbs joined the faculty at Grand Valley State University in Fall 2009.She received her M.M.E at the Hartt School of Music Dance and Theater,University of Hartford, and her B.S. in music education from The Pennsylvania State University. She is currently completing her Ph.D. in music education at The Pennsylvania State University with a cognate in educational psychology. Prior to her appointment at GVSU, she has held teaching positions at The Pennsylvania State University and the State College Friends School in State College, PA, as well as Red Lion Area Junior High School in Red Lion, PA. Her professional interests include research into effective music teaching practices, music teaching and learning interactions, and the influence of musical gaming on the changing nature of musical interaction. She has presented her research at state, regional, and national music education conferences. Her professional memberships include the Music Educators National Conference and the Society for Research in Music Education.


Giuseppe Lupis is an Assistant Professor of Piano, and Artist Performer at Grand Valley State University.  His interests range from baroque to contemporary styles and from jazz to his own arrangements of popular music. Performance venues include among others Temple Square Concert Series, Salt Lake City, UT.  He also serves on the faculty at  Serate Musicali, Verdi Conservatory Hall, Milan, Italy; Municipality Hall, Varna, Bulgaria; Guido Miranda Theatre, Resistencia, Argentina; Treze de Majo Theatre, Santa Maria, Brazil; Neuwied, Germany; Contemporary Music Society, Krakow, Poland; and Volyn State University, Lutsk, Ukraine. Giuseppe Lupis performed for the American Liszt Society Festival; the Peabody Award Banquet at the Governor’s Mansion in Atlanta, Georgia; and the ACDA convention at The Clay Center in Charleston, West Virginia.

As soloist he has appeared with the Lviv, Latvian, and Bari Symphonies, the UGA Symphony and the Ascoli Chamber Orchestra. He has also performed with percussionist and composer Ney Rosauro, and his live DVD recording with guitar player Scotty Anderson was released in September 2008. His compact disc of George Gershwin solo works (Phoenix label, 2000) was declared “exceptional” by musicologist Alberto Cantù on Il Giornale (Milan, Italy). Giuseppe Lupis served on the juries of the International Singing Competition “Citta’ di Alcamo”, and the Premio Massimo Urbani Jazz Competition of which he is former artistic director. In the United States he has adjudicated events in Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, Missouri, and Arkansas, including the MTNA South Central Division National Competition.

Previous teaching positions include the Bari and Campobasso Italian state conservatories, the G.B Pergolesi Music Institute in Ancona, Italy; Wesleyan College, Georgia Southern University, Pittsburg State University, and Missouri Southern State University in the United States. As a pedagogue, Giuseppe Lupis has given masterclasses, including Chopin Music Lyceum, Krakow, Poland; Volyn State University, Lutsk, Ukraine; Valdosta State University; and University of Southern Mississippi; and has taught also at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, Michigan; The Ascoli Piceno Festival, Italy; and the Vale Veneto Festival, Brazil. 

A former pupil of renowned concert pianist Aldo Ciccolini, Giuseppe Lupis holds a Doctorate in Musical Arts in piano performance at the University of Georgia, under the tutelage of Richard Zimdars, and a piano performance degree earned with highest honors at the Bari Conservatory, Italy, with Pierluigi Camicia. In addition, Giuseppe Lupis studied with jazz pianist Enrico Pieranunzi, and at La Scala Theatre Academy in Milan. He is a recipient of the 2005 Franz Liszt Award and the 2003 Concerto Competition Award at the University of Georgia, and second prize winner of the 1989 Italian National Béla Bartók piano competition. For his research on Keith Emerson’s music, currently referenced in Wikipedia.de and other websites, Giuseppe Lupis received a 2007 Excellence in Research Award from The University of Georgia. Music Sales Corporation/G. Schirmer, New York, NY, granted him worldwide non-exclusive rights to “publish, copy, print, and sell” Emerson’s suite Tarkus. Giuseppe Lupis is currently writing the biography of Italian pianist Luciano Sangiorgi (1921-1992) and has recently given a presentation on the topic at the UNAR Hall in Rome, Italy.


John Martin recently joined Grand Valley State University’s vibrant music program as Assistant Director of Bands/Director of Athletic Bands. His duties include teaching music education courses, conducting the University Band, and coordinating the athletic band program. Prior to his appointment at Grand Valley, Martin served as Assistant Director of Bands at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He assisted the nationally acclaimed “Pride of the Southland” Marching Band as instructor, drill designer, and arranger. Martin’s other responsibilities included conducting the University Concert Band, administering and conducting all pep band activities, and teaching undergraduate courses in brass methods and marching band techniques. He began his music education career at Vance Middle School in Memphis where he served as band director.

John Martin has finished coursework for the DMA degree in wind conducting at the University of Southern Mississippi where he studied conducting with Dr. Thomas V. Fraschillo and Dr. Steven R. Moser. He received the Bachelor of Music Education and Master of Music in Wind Conducting degrees from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville where he studied conducting with Dr. Gary Sousa, Dr. WJ Julian, and Dr. Gary Schallert. Among Martin’s other conducting activities, he served as conductor of the Babahatchie Community Band in Harriman, Tennessee and guest conductor of the East Tennessee Concert Band in Knoxville. He presented a session concerning first year teaching strategies at the 2007 Tennessee Music Educators Conference. Martin continues to actively serve as a clinician, adjudicator, and guest conductor throughout the nation. He has numerous tuba/euphonium arrangements published through TUBA Press.

Martin holds membership in many professional organizations including the National Band Association, East Tennessee School Band & Orchestra Association, Music Educators National Conference, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. In 2001, he was awarded Phi Mu Alpha’s Orpheus Award.


Award-winning saxophonist Jonathan Nichol has joined the vibrant music faculty at Grand Valley State University. Prior to this appointment he was adjunct professor of saxophone at Alma College. Nichol is also instructor of saxophone at the Interlochen Center for the Arts Michigan All State Band Program.  He is a doctoral candidate at Michigan State University. Nichol’s primary teachers have been John Nichol, Joseph Lulloff, Rob Smith, Diego Rivera, and Rodney Whitaker. He is a recipient of the prestigious Michigan State University Distinguished Fellowship. Nichol graduated from Central Michigan University Summa Cum Laude earning a Bachelor of Music Education degree (2005) and holds a Master of Music degree in performance from Michigan State University (2007).

Nichol has performed with the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, Nelson Riddle Orchestra, Harry James Orchestra, Gene Krupa Orchestra, The Four Tops, The Fifth Dimension, Lansing Symphony Big Band, Flint Symphony Orchestra, Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra, and the Nichol Trio. He was a Presser Scholar (CMU, 2004) and was the winner of the Central Michigan University Concerto Competition and two-time winner of the Michigan State University Concerto Competition. Nichol recently performed Michael Torke’s Saxophone Concerto with the Alma Symphony Orchestra. He is a member of the acclaimed H2 Saxophone Quartet, recipients of the prestigious Gold Medal at the 2007 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition and the First Prize Award at the inaugural North American Saxophone Alliance Chamber Music Competition. The H2 Quartet’s CD Generations will be released in August 2008 on the Blue Griffin Recordings label.
