Concert Band

Concert Band (MUS 102)

Under the baton of Professor John Martin, the Grand Valley State University Concert Band is comprised of the finest music majors and talented non-music majors at Grand Valley State University. This ensemble is dedicated to broadening the artistic level and interest of its members while performing music of artistic and historical significance. Such works include: H. Owen Reed's La Fiesta Mexicana, Frank Ticheli's Vesuvius, David Maslanka's Give Us This Day, Rolf Rudin's Der Traum des Oenghus, and Symphony No. 6 For Band by Vincent Persichetti. The GVSU Concert Band has also been featured at the Michigan Music Conference in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Membership is open to all Grand Valley State University students after completion of a successful audition. Audition information is below. Please contact Professor John Martin at if you have any further questions.

Fall 2017 Concert Band Audition Information

1) If you are only auditioning for Concert Band, please download the specific excerpts for your instrument and prepare the page or pages to the best of your ability.  The audition committee will be looking for good tone quality, rhythm, style and dynamic contrast. You will also be asked to sight read a short excerpt at the audition.

2) If you are planning on auditioning for Symphonic Wind Ensemble or Orchestra (this includes all music majors and music minors), you do not need to play an additional audition for Concert Band since that audition will serve as your Concert Band audition.  Please go under “Ensemble Auditions” on the left side of this page and prepare the excerpts and show up for your instrument’s specific block of time.

Audition Times and Location

Location:  Performing Arts Center, Room 1211

Audition Times: Sunday, August 27, 6-9pm

The sign up list for Concert Band auditions will be located on Professor John Martin’s office door (PAC 1211) on August 21, 2017.  If you would like to sign up for an audition time prior to August 21, 2017, please contact Professor John Martin at with the day and time range you would like and he will you with your specific audition time.

Audition Results

Concert Band audition results (not including clarinet or percussion) will be posted on the PAC 1515 (band room) bulletin board at 4:00pm on Monday, August 28, 2017

The first rehearsal will be Monday, August 28, 2017 in PAC 1515 from 7:00 - 8:50pm.
