Description
Mozart's Serenade in B-Flat Major, KV 361, the Grand Partita, is one of the composer's most beloved compositions and the wind band genre's earliest masterpiece. In Mozart’s time, serenades were dinner music, performed at aristocratic parties and other social events — but the Grand Partita is more than just entertainment. Mozart’s wind masterpiece is a pioneering work of symphonic scope that brilliantly employs a full range of wind instrument colors throughout a score of unsurpassed genius.
The Grand Partita is composed for the standard wind section of the symphony orchestra with the unique addition of basset horns and double bass, giving Mozart new instrumental combinations to explore, while preserving the solo operatic personalities of each individual instrument. Lowell Graham, former conductor of the USAF Band, Washington, D.C., will be returning to West Michigan to lead a superb ensemble comprised of GVSU faculty and Grand Rapids Symphony musicians. Don't miss this opportunity to hear one of Mozart’s great masterpieces, performed in its entirety and original orchestration. In the words of a listener at the 1784 premier: “I heard music for wind instruments today by Herr Mozart — oh what an effect it made — glorious and grand, excellent and sublime.”
