Mission

The Department of Movement Science is a multidisciplinary unit which encompasses programs in Physical Education, Health Education, Exercise Science, Athletic Training, and Sport Leadership bound by the common theme of movement as the basis for healthy living.  The department contributes to the enrichment of society through excellent teaching, scholarly activity, and service which reflect the department's commitment to university, community, state, national, and global issues related to healthy, active lifestyles.

Background

The Department of Movement Science has evolved from its founding as a single program in physical education teacher preparation under the umbrella of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, Physical Education, and Recreation, into a multi-disciplinary unit serving over 900 major and minor students through majors in Athletic Training, Exercise Science, and Physical Education.  Students pursuing a degree in Exercise Science pick a major emphasis of either Clinical Exercise Science or Health Fitness Instruction, while students in Physical Education pick a major emphasis of either K-12 Professional Instruction or Sports Leadership.  Secondary level teachable minors are available in Health Education and Physical Education.  In addition to major and minor programs, the department serves the general GVSU student body through a General Education course in the Sport and Life theme, "Sport in Society", an Honors College course, "The Human Body", and a growing array of one credit Skills Development Activity Courses (SDAC) in subjects such as Rock Climbing, Kayaking, Rowing, Yoga, Pilates, plus a wide variety of individual and team activities (over 2,000 GVSU students participate yearly in SDAC in courses).
