Godfrey Elementary School Volunteer interpreters
March 20 and 22, 2012
During parent-teacher conferences
We serve a growing Spanish speaking population and have parent teacher conferences coming up on the 20th and 22nd of March. I was speaking with Student Support staff here at Godfrey Elementary and we thought some of the local colleges might be good resources for our interpreting needs during parent teacher conferences. I would hope there may be a handful of capable students from your institution who would be interested. Preferably they would have some prior classroom or other volunteer interpreting experience. Experience with sight translation of documents and consecutive interpreting is most ideal, no one will need to perform any simultaneous interpretation. Our teachers are experienced in working with interpreters and great at preparing for the interaction with Spanish speaking parents. Ideally we would like to have one student per class room so scheduling is less hectic this year, so there is lots of space for any student who would like to volunteer!
Have interested students email Sam Johnson at sjohnson@godfrey-lee.org or give me a call at 616-475-0522 ext. 2324.

Southwest Community Campus Looking for Spanish Tutors
Southwest Community Campus, a two-way immersion school, is looking for volunteers to tutor students. Southwest Community Campus, is a PreK-grade 8 school, in the Grand Rapids Public School system. The student population is comprised of both native Spanish- and native English- speaking students.
The school requests that you commit to volunteer an hour (or more) weekly. Students can volunteer to tutor small groups of students Tuesday, Wednesday, and/or Thursday from 4-5 and/or 5-6. The school will offer a training workshop and advising meeting during the early part of October.
Given the goals of the program, only students who have taken or are currently enrolled in SPA 202 or higher are eligible to volunteer. Grand Rapids Public Schools requires a background checks for all volunteers.
If you are interested, please contact either Prof. Menke (menkem@gvsu.edu) or Prof. Vrooman (vroomanm@gvsu.edu) to set up a meeting to discuss how you might get involved. In your initial email, please indicate the highest level Spanish class taken to date and your availability for tutoring.
Jenison Public Schools Elementary Spanish Immersion ProgramThe Jenison Public Schools elementary Spanish immersion program is looking for student volunteers to work with students in the program. There are opportunities to read books with individual students or small groups, work with small groups on vocabulary, write stories that students dictate, observe teachers, and more. This is a great opportunity for you to put your Spanish skills in to use, especially for those of you who enjoy working with children and/or who are interested in teaching.
The schools request that you commit to volunteer an hour (or more) weekly for a month or more. Jenison Public Schools requires background checks on individuals who volunteer on a repeated basis.
If you are interested, please contact either Prof. Menke (menkem@gvsu.edu) or Prof. Vrooman (vroomanm@gvsu.edu) to set up a meeting to discuss how you might get involved.
Michigan Migrant Legal Assistant Project
Michigan Migrant Legal Assistant Project and the Spanish Section have been awarded a grant to work with immigrant children on farms in Kent County. We designed a project to tutor children grades 4-8 during the summer 2011.
We are asking students from GVSU:
- To volunteer four hours of their time every week from July to September. You do not need to volunteer for the entire three months; you can choose as many days as you are available.
- You will tutor students in math, science and technology. If you are a Spanish student, you are eligible to use this experience as credit towards your minor or major in Spanish. The number of credits depends on the hours you work and the projects you will fulfill. This needs to be arranged ahead of time with Prof. Natalia Gomez at gomezn@gvsu.edu.
- You can also use this experience towards your Education degree to fulfill your requirements in voluntary work. Please contact:

Every student will be provided with gas money, lunch and the necessary technology.
Impact of your help: Studies show that only 41.2% of migrant and seasonal farmworkers in Michigan have completed grades fifth through 8th, and only 19.1% completed fourth grade or less. Unfortunately, 2.6% never attended school. There are approximately 13,488 migrant and seasonal farmworkers in Oceana, Newaygo, and Muskegon Counties. The expected impact of the program is to improve the education of migrant students so that they will be encouraged to pursue and complete their education in science, math, language and health.

Thank you,
Our organization is in need of 1 or 2 students who could teach a weekly English as Second Language class. The class is a weekly class that meets on Tuesday evenings from 6:15 - 8:15pm. The classes are located downtown Grand Rapids 839 Sibley St NW (right next door to Sibley School).
Interested students should have basic Spanish speaking skills, but do not need to be bilingual. I would review the curriculum and details of the class with any interested students. I would ask that students commit to the class through the end of this semester. If they are able to continue teaching through Spring and / or Summer that would be wonderful.
If you have any questions, or for any interested students, please contact me via email or phone.
