Sparta Migrant Head Start

If anyone has free time, we would really appreciate it if you came to volunteer for the migrant head start in Sparta. They are in dire need of In Kind (volunteers and donations). This would be excellent practice for Spanish or education students! Or just come to play with the children. You can bring a musical instrument or read to them. You are allowed to come for 4 hours or less per day without having any tests or background check. Another way you could help is by donations (children's clothes, art supplies, etc).

South End Community Outreach Ministries (SECOM)

Educational activities for Pre-K children.
Every last Thursday of the month, and hopefully soon twice a month, SECOM offers a baby pantry for mothers with children up to two years of age from 12 noon to roughly 2:00 p.m. We provide Day Care for the children while mothers attend nutrition classes for an hour and then shop fro baby products. We have a retired teacher that prepares some structure activities for these children in an effort to support the mothers and help prepare their children for school. We need volunteers/interns that will serve to support, assist and guide the children in the activities. Requirements: Spanish would be preferred as most of the clients are Hispanic, also students should be interested in areas of child development and education and possess a great disposition to work with children.

The Hispanic Center of Western Michigan

We need volunteers for the following:

1. 10 to 20 Tutors: We have after school tutoring for youth, ages 14 to 21, that are high school, GED and/or college freshmen. Tutoring is Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tutors must pass a criminal background check and commit to at least one day per week for a minimum of 10 weeks. This provides consistency to the lives of the youth and offers a more meaningful experience for the tutor. If interested tutors should contact me at 616.734.0477 or via Email at sstout@hispanic-center.org. Monday/Wednesday is for the HOY Program (males and females) and Tuesday/Thursday is for the Supporting Our Leaders (SOL) Program for Hispanic males that are transitioning from gang/street life to mainstream.

1. 2 to 6 SOL Outreach Workers: We are in need of interns to conduct outreach to the schools we serve. They will serve as role models, truancy officers and academic monitors for the SOL Program. Interns will need to be trained regarding youth gang intervention. We ask for a 2 semester commitment, as the intern will receive extensive training. Interns should be culturally competent with both Hispanic and youth cultures. A criminal and driving record background check is required. Interns must have a valid driver’s license and have reliable transportation. Mileage is reimbursable. Must be comfortable working with gang affiliated and inner-city youth. To apply, interns should Email a cover letter and resume to me. Must be available during the school day (8 a.m. – 2 p.m.) for at least 10 hours per week.

1. SOL Program Interns: The SOL Program serves Hispanic males, age 14 to 21, and their families to live productive, healthy and violence-free lives. We are a gang intervention program with great opportunities for professional development for college students. We need interns to serve as Family Outreach Coordinators (coordinate monthly parent meetings, home visits and other family support services), Administrative Assistant to the Director of Youth Intervention Services (make flyers, coordinate meetings, job shadow the director, type meeting minutes, Email, fax, file, coordinate events (Day of the Dead, Holiday Food Baskets), etc…) Spanish is strongly preferred, but not required. Strong applicants will have high competency with MS Word and Excel, phone etiquette and professionalism. To apply, interns should Email a cover letter and resume to me.
