Application Process

The Short Answer

Come to the office (230 STU) to pick up an application. We don't provide an online application because the application process requires a time investment, and we want to help. We also want to make sure that you're ready to make the commitment to a Ph.D. program. To review what that may mean to you, please see the long answer below.

When you hand in the application, you'll also need two letters of recommendation, an application essay, a copy of both your transcript and your class schedule, and some tax information. Please call us at (616) 331-3441 to make an appointment to speak with our Associate Director, Dolli, or e-mail her directly. Also, feel free to contact us with any questions.

The Long Answer

First, we need to make sure that you qualify. Review the eligibility checklist and check the FAQ for any additional questions you may have about class standing, major, etc.
There is more the being a McNair Scholar than just having good grades and an interest in learning. You must be committed to earning a Ph.D. If you're not sure you want a Ph.D., or aren't sure the career you want requires one, be sure to check out the Grad School Guide for some useful information. You should also talk to your advisor or some of the faculty in your field to discuss your options. The Counseling and Career Center is a very valuable resource. You may want to do some job shadowing to see what life is really like for someone in your intended career.
You should make sure you can commit to the program. We'll have some activities for you during both the school year and the summer. Take a look at the Summer Research Program component and at the FAQ to learn more about housing, classes, and schedules.
