Mathematics Department Scholarships and Awards

Mathematics Department offers the following scholarships and awards annually. For more up-to-date information about these scholarships and awards, and the eligibility requirements, please contact the Mathematics Department office.

Mathematics Scholarship
These scholarships are given to mathematics majors (double majors are eligible for these scholarships) to honor students with outstanding performance and to encourage them to continue in mathematics at that level of excellence. These scholarships are made possible by the generous support of contributors to the Mathematics Endowment Fund. The scholarship amount is at least $500.
Application packets for these scholarships are available from the Mathematics Department and the applications are due in February. Contact the Math Office for the exact due date. The eligibility requirements for the scholarships are

The student must have a declared major in mathematics,
The student must have at least 45 credit hours completed by the time of application,
The student must have completed at least 14 credit hours in the major (excluding cognates) at Grand Valley State University and be enrolled in at least one mathematics course at the time of application,
The applicant must be returning to GVSU the following year as a full-time student and will be expected to take at least one mathematics course during that academic year,
The student must have an overall GPA of 3.2 or better.

Donald and Barbara VanderJagt Mathematics and Athletics Scholarship
The donors of this scholarship recognize that there are two activities on campus that take a considerable amount of time and commitment, namely, majoring in mathematics and participating in athletics. A significant number of students do either of these, a considerably smaller number of students do both. The purpose of this scholarship is to recognize and award students who both major in mathematics and participate in athletics.
The donors also recognize that the outstanding mathematics major and the person who excels on an intercollegiate athletic team will each be recognized in their respective units. The intention of this scholarship is to recognize student-athletes who may not be outstanding in either area, but still are committed to both areas and spend considerable time and energy to stay competitive both in the classroom and on the playing field.
Application packets for these scholarships are available from the Mathematics Department and the applications are due to the Financial Aid Office in March. Contact the Math Office or the Financial Aid Office for the exact due date. To be eligible for the scholarship, the student must satisfy all of the following criteria:

Have sophomore (or later) undergraduate standing at Grand Valley State University with an overall GPA of at least 2.5,
Enrolled with full-time status as a declared mathematics major degree-seeking student at Grand Valley State University, continuously taking at least one mathematics course leading to a mathematics major,
Participate in and is a member of at least one intercollegiate athletic team or one club sport team at Grand Valley State University, as verified by the Assistant Athletic Director,
Shall be making satisfactory academic progress according to the norms established by the University and by the NCAA,
Financial need, as defined by the government programs, may be considered. For such consideration, students must file the FAFSA.

Outstanding Sophomore Award
This award recognizes one or two sophomore standing students for their achievements early in their respective academic careers, and encourages continued success in mathematics. The nominations for this award come from faculty. The student does not have to be a math major to receive the award.

Senior Award
This award recognizes ten of our senior standing students for their excellent work in the mathematics major, and their overall contributions to the department. The nominations for this award come from faculty. The student has to be a math major to receive the award (double majors are eligible for these awards).

Outstanding Senior Award
This award recognizes one graduating senior student for the excellent work in the mathematics major and contributions to the department and the university. The Outstanding Senior is also recognized by the university during the annual Awards Banquet. The nominations for this award come from faculty. The student has to be a math major to receive the award (double majors are eligible for this award).

Mathematics and Community Service Award
This award is to honor a mathematics major who exhibits excellence in mathematics and a strong record of community service related to mathematics, mathematics education, or education.
