Cody Copus graduated from GVSU in 2009 with a BS in mathematics (secondary teaching emphasis) and economics minor. Currently he lives in Lancaster, PA, where he is employed as an asset quality analyst with Fulton Financial Corporation. Fulton provides a wide range of financial products and services to clients in PA, MD, DE, VA, and NJ. In his position, Cody performs loan portfolio analytics and constructs loan loss models.
Cody feels that mathematics developed his problem solving skills and gave him the background needed to understand data modeling. Of those courses in the mathematics major, he feels that MTH 210 (Communicating in Mathematics) was one of the most useful for preparing him for his current position. “I am better able to communicate complex information in a user friendly way so that management can make appropriate decisions.”
To those students contemplating a mathematics major, Cody offers the following advice: “You will have a step up cognitively on your peers if you pursue mathematics. Mathematics is behind a majority of business decisions and business systems. If you can develop great communication skills (people skills) alongside problem solving skills, then success will find you…. Seek out opportunities to work in different industries like Education, Banking, Insurance during the summer or during school.”
