Mathematics Major (B.A. and B.S.) and Mathematics Minor

The Department of Mathematics at GVSU offers Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics, with emphases available in elementary and secondary education. A minor in mathematics is also available, including minors for elementary and secondary certification.

Mathematics major requirements

Core requirements:

Other major requirements (not seeking teacher certification)

  • Complete MTH 203 and MTH 408,
  • Complete one of the following sequences: MTH 310-410, MTH 408-409, MTH 341-431, MTH 300-400, MTH 300-401, MTH 345-360,
  • Complete additional courses from the following list to make a total of at least 11 courses in MTH: MTH 300, 304, 327, 341, 345, 360, 400, 401, 402, 405, 409, 410, 431, 441, 465.

Other major requirements (elementary certification):

Other major requirements (secondary certification):

  • Complete MTH 203, 229, 329, 341, 345,
  • Complete one course from MTH 300, 304, 327, 360, 400, 401, 402, 405, 408, 409, 410, 431, 441, 465, 495, 496. Note that this course must be different than the capstone.

Mathematics minor requirements

Minor requirements (not seeking certification)

  • Complete MTH 201 and 202,
  • Complete at least one of MTH 203 and MTH 210,
  • Complete at least one of MTH 227 and MTH 302,
  • Complete at least one upper-level math course (300-400 level), and one more math or stats upper-level course. MTH 302 cannot be used to satisfy this requirement. MTH 304 cannot be used to satisfy this requirement if MTH 302 is chosen for the third requirement above.

Minor requirements for elementary certification

  • Complete MTH 201, 202, 210, 322, 323, 324,
  • Complete one additional approved course.

Minor requirements for secondary certification

  • Complete MTH 201, 202, 210, 227, 310, 341, and STA 312,
  • Complete MTH 229 or MTH 329.
