Applications of Optimal Control to Various Population Models

Dr. Suzanne Lenhart is a full professor in the Mathematics Department at the University of Tennessee and has a very interesting and impressive mathematical resume, including: President of the Association for Women in Mathematics (2001-2002), Part-time employee of Oak Ridge National Laboratory, current member of the Board of Society of Mathematical Biology and SIAM Education Committee, member of SIAM Council (1995-2000) and director of Research Experiences for Undergraduates site at UTK, 1990-2003. Her research interests include Partial differential equations, Optimal control, Population and environmental models, Quantum mechanics, bioremediation, lasers and resource management, and AIDS and other disease models. She received her Ph.D. at the University of Kentucky in partial differential equations.

Her talk for MUMC is titled Applications of Optimal Control to Various Population Models.

Abstract: An introduction to the basic ideas of optimal control of ordinary differential equations will be given. The differences between optimal control of ordinary differential equations and optimal control of partial differential equations will be briefly explained. An ordinary differential system for disease model will be used to illustrate the techniques. Bioreactors can be used to transform contaminants into less hazardous substances through bacteria metabolism. An example model for a gas phase bioreactor has a parabolic partial differential equation coupled with an ordinary differential equation.

Conference Program

Abstracts of the talks

game show Following the tradition of MUMC in recent years, the conference will close with a mathematical game show with student and faculty participants. This year's event will be Hollywood Equiangular Rhombi, hosted by Grand Valley State professors Will Dickinson, Jon Hodge, and Reva Kasman. If you wish to participate, simply indicate your interest on the online registration form in the appropriate box. Prizes will be awarded to all contestants.

Registration deadlines

Abstract submission for student talks - Friday, October 10

Sponsors

We greatly appreciate the support of each of the following sponsors: the book, software, and technology companies for their donations of prizes for student participants, and the universities for their generous financial support. Their contributions are essential and have enabled us to develop a successful conference that is beneficial to undergraduate students. The universities noted below will also have exhibits to showcase opportunities for various programs they offer.
