S-STEMS
Program Summary
Scholarships are awarded in amounts of up to full tuition for an academic year and are used for expenses normally incurred by full-time students including tuition, fees, books, supplies, and equipment. Scholarship selection is competitive. Participants in the S-STEMS Program are chosen on the basis of their achievements and their potential for success. Further, successful applicants must demonstrate need for Federal financial aid as determined by the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).
An award is distributed among the semesters in that academic year in which a scholarship participant is enrolled full-time in one of the targeted disciplines. A student selected to participate in this program is assigned and will work closely with a faculty mentor in one's chosen discipline. Scholarship recipients will also participate in regular, discipline-specific sessions with fellow scholarship recipients under the guidance of the faculty mentors. Recipients should be willing to adjust their fall and winter schedules so that attendance at these sessions is possible.
The initial NSF grant provided two years of scholarship funding that began with the 2007-2008 academic year and ended with the 2010-2011 academic year. GVSU submitted a grant proposal that was successfully funded, and will allow GVSU to continue to offer scholarships under the S-STEMS Program. However, funds for the grants are limited and are competitive.
