Renewal check out times vary. Please call the University Libraries at  616-331-2613  for detailed information.
  • The maximum number of items undergraduates can have checked out at one time is 20.  The maximum number of items graduates can have checked out at one time is 30.  The maximum number of items Faculty can have checked out at one time is 50.
  • 14 days after an item is due and NOT returned, your account is charged $47.00. If you return the item in good condition within 60 days, $45.00 is refunded and a $2.00 fine is charged. An e-mail notification will be sent to you. (The library is not responsible for the receipt of the notification.)
  • Outstanding fines and fees will prevent you from checking out additional items. If there is a pending hold or recall on an item currently checked out to your account, you will be prevented from renewing this item.
  • Holds and recalls can be placed on circulating items by using the Catalog. If an item you have checked out is recalled, you will be notified and given a new due date. The late fee on a recalled item is $1.00/day until the item is returned.
  • Materials returned damaged will be billed at the lower of the repair or the replacement cost.
  • The overdue fine for hourly course reserve materials is a maximum fine of $5.00. The overdue fine for three-day and one-week course reserve materials is $1.00/day with a maximum fine of $5.00.
  • Any fines or fees over $5.00 will be sent to the accounting office 60 days after the billing date. This charge may impact your ability to register for classes and your graduation status.

Document Delivery Policies

  • ILL services are offered to current GVSU Faculty, Emeritus Faculty, Staff, and Students. Michicard patrons cannot request from document delivery.
  • Only those materials not owned by the GVSU Library or those materials that are marked ''missing'' in the GVSU public catalog may be requested. (Please allow up to 2 weeks to fill a request.)
  • The following materials cannot be requested.
    • Textbooks
    • Rare books
    • Complete issues of journals
    • Genealogy
    • Bound copies of GVSU-owned e-books
  • Undergraduates will be limited to 10, Graduates to 20 and Faculty and Staff to 30 active requests.
  • Electronically delivered items are available for 14 days.
  • All renewals on Interlibrary Loan Books are done at the discretion of the lending library and you may only request one renewal. Any item more than 7 days past the due date may not be renewed.
  • An account will be blocked when an item is more than 14 days over due.
  • GVSU pays up to $20.00 on behalf of a patron for each requested item.

Course Reserve Policies
  • The University Libraries offer electronic reserves that students can access either through the library's homepage or through blackboard. Other items placed on reserve can be checked out for various durations determined by the faculty. Please respect the reserve times to ensure you do not incur fines.
  • Information for faculty: Please review the GVSU Copyright Policy. The library will pay the first $30.00 of copyright fees when incurred after first time, fair use. The library staff handles all copyright compliance issues.
MeLCat Policies
MeLCat is the statewide resource sharing project to share materials among all types of libraries in Michigan. GVSU students faculty and staff can borrow books, videos, CDs, DVDs and more. There is no fee, though normal GVSU overdue fines, damage or replacement fees apply.
  • Regular loan period is 21 days, with one 21 day renewal, no earlier than 7 days before due date; some audio-visual items can only be checked out for 7 days with no renewal
  • An email is sent when an item is available for pickup, the item will be held for 10 days
  • The status of active requests, including renewals, can be viewed in your library account
  • 50 outstanding requests can be active at any time
  • Items may be returned to either the supplying or borrowing/home library
  • Request cannot be made on materials available at GVSU. In addition, individual journal articles are not requestable. For these, please use Document Delivery. Holds or recalls cannot be placed on unavailable items.
  • Delivery can take up to 2 weeks
  • Items requested through MeLCat can not be placed on Course Reserve of the borrowing library
If patrons return materials to a different participating MeL delivery library, they may be responsible for fines accrued until the items are checked in by the borrowing library.
