About the GVSU Government Documents Collection

Location of Government Documents

When searching the library catalog for government documents, you will likely see many of the following locations:
  • Zumberge Government Docs
    • The majority of print format government documents are located in Zumberge Library (in Allendale) on the north side of the 4th floor.
  • Zumberge Gov Docs Reference
    • These books are located in the northeast corner of the 4th floor - they're located just behind the government documents display shelves.
  • Zumberge Gov Docs Microform
    • File cabinets containing microfiche and readers are located in the northeast corner of the 4th floor.  If you need to print from microfiche, readers/copiers are available near the file cabinets.
  • Zumberge Gov Docs AV
    • Government publications that are available in CD-ROM or DVD formats can be found in a cabinet in the northeast corner of the 4th floor. They can be checked out at the circulation desk on the 1st floor, and used either on the Government Documents PC in the reference area (also on the 1st floor) or on one's personal computer.
  • Zumberge Maps
    • Map files are located in the southwest corner of the 4th floor. Atlases are located near these cabinets.
  • Zumberge Stacks, Zumberge Reference or Zumberge Periodicals
    • Most government documents that are classified using the LC system are located in the stacks on the 2nd and 3rd floors of Zumberge Library or in the Reference collection on the 1st floor.  Government publications that are considered periodicals will be located with other periodicals on the 4th floor.
  • Seidman Special Collections
    • Select government publications are located at the Seidman House.  These include the U.S. Congressional Serial Set, various rare and older government publications, and superceded USGS maps of Michigan.
  • Steelcase ASRS Gov Docs
    • Certain government publications are located at the Steelcase Library on the Pew Campus.  These are government publications in the Steelcase Library classified using both the SuDoc and LC classification schemes.  Most government publications in the Steelcase Library are located in the library's Automatic Retrieval System (ASRS), but there are others located in STEELCASE Reference and in STEELCASE Closed Reserve.  CD-ROMs that are located at the Steelcase Library can be checked out and used in the library on the Government Documents PC or they can be loaded and used on personal computers.
  • Internet
    • More and more government information is being made available on the internet.  Items ranging from the 2000 U.S. Census to the Code of Federal Regulations to this year's current budget are now easily accessible online. You can find many of these items in our catalog (look for [electronic resource] after the title). You may also want to look at Finding Aids, Search Engines and Directories in order to find more online government information.
