- This extremely extensive collection of online maps is an excellent place to begin your search for small-scale maps.
- Oddens' Bookmarks
- This site contains over 20,000 links to maps, map collections, gazetteers, map vendors, and other online resources. A good source for finding printable maps of foreign countries, but United States coverage is limited.
- United Nations Cartographic Section
- Access high-quality country profile maps, maps of UN peacekeeping missions, and other thematic maps. All maps are in PDF format.
- Library of Congress American Memory Project
- Search or browse this collection of high-resolution historic maps that can be downloaded and manipulated with graphic software.
- David Rumsey
- This site has over 8,800 maps online. "The collection focuses on rare 18th and 19th century North and South America maps and other cartographic materials. Historic maps of the World, Europe, Asia and Africa are also represented."
- Union List of Sanborn and Other Fire Insurance Maps
- This list from the Western Association of Map Libraries includes the state of Michigan and thirty other states and Canadian provinces. GVSU's holdings of Sanborn maps on microfilm for Grand Haven, Grand Rapids, Holland and Muskegon are not included on this list. The list also does not include the Library of Michigan's extensive holdings of Sanborn maps on microfilm.
- Map Michigan
- From the Michigan Center for Geographic Information. This site allows you to search for a variety options from addresses or intersections to points of interest or coordinates. You can also select from maps of interest with pre-selected features, plan a route between locations, save the maps you have created, and switch between street maps, aerial photos, topographic maps, elevation maps and groundcover maps.
- National Atlas of the United States
- This online version of the national atlas updates the paper version from the 1970s. Create maps on a wide variety of themes.
- National Geographic Map Machine
- This interactive atlas includes thematic maps of the world and United States, as well as historic maps, street maps, and more.
- American Factfinder
- From the U.S. Census Bureau. Create customized reference and thematic maps based on 1990 and 2000 census data.
- Google Maps
- Similar in some ways to other interactive map engines that provide color maps and driving directions, Google Maps also allows you to click and drag on the map to adjust what you are viewing. It also allows you to toggle between satellite images and traditional maps.
- Terraserver
- Similar to Topozone, this site includes aerial photographs in addition to topographic maps.
