"My object in living is to unite my avocation and vocation as my two eyes make one in sight"

— Robert Frost

William James — the 19th century physician, psychologist, physiologist, philosopher and teacher, associated with a pragmatic approach to social, technical and economic areas, with a pluralistic attitude toward the physical and social sciences he pursued, and with an urbane humanism in his personal life.

Background of the William James Synoptic Lecture
Each year, Grand Valley invites a distinguished person from outside the college to visit and present his or her special vision of life in a series of small-group discussions and public lectures. Previous synoptic lecturers have included environmental scientist Sandra Steingraber, sociologist Juliet Schoor, cultural critic William Irwin Thompson, writer Tillie Olsen, historian Herbert Gutman, and filmmakers Leo Hurwitz and Ken Burns.

These events provide students, faculty and alumni with opportunities to engage in dialogue and critical reflection. Speakers encourage the integration of career and vocation.
