Career Opportunities

An education that emphasizes the ability to think critically and synthesize divergent points of view is the best kind of career preparation.

What employers will increasingly need, in the words of futurist Alvin Toffler, are "men and women who accept responsibility, who understand how their work dovetails with others, who can handle ever larger tasks, who adapt swiftly to changed circumstances, and are sensitively tuned in to people around them."

A major in liberal studies prepares graduates for jobs that require a broad background, research skills, quick learning ability, and skilled decision making. It is also good preparation for graduate school in a number of fields.

Graduates with a major in liberal studies have become teachers, lawyers, administrators, government workers, public relations specialists, researchers, and librarians. Some have created their own nontraditional careers. Others have done graduate work in law, religion, philosophy, and the social sciences.
