Chalk and Wire in Liberal Studies

Letter to Students:

November 21, 2013

Dear Liberal Studies Majors:

E-portfolios are finally here! Commencing in the winter semester of 2014 all Liberal Studies Majors with the exception of April 2014 graduates will begin using the Chalk and Wire web based e-portfolio system. You will be able to create a portfolio that will benefit you throughout your studies and will be a valuable asset as you move forward in your educational and professional life. You will purchase Chalk and Wire at the GVSU bookstore (for more information, please see frequently asked questions). This subscription will be active for four years from your first sign-in date with the option to renew after four years.

Subscription codes can currently be purchased at the Allendale bookstore only, but will soon be available on PEW campus as well. Please be sure to purchase the Liberal Studies Chalk and Wire access code, not Social Work’s access code. You will find the subscription card listed under the course “LIB 999.” If you need assistance, please don’t hesitate to contact the Liberal Studies Department Office (616-331-8020) or the Chalk and Wire Help Line (616-331-8009).

Chalk and Wire e-portfolio will enable you to store and access your work throughout your entire academic program. You will be able to see the connections between your academic and career goals and the Liberal Studies Program learning outcomes. You will be required to upload course assignments to Chalk and Wire e-portfolio that will be specified as Program Wide Assignments in your syllabi.  In addition you will be able to upload work unique to your major study plan and area of focus.  At the end of the program, you will have a complete portfolio of Program-Wide Assignments that document your professional and academic growth.

When you purchase a Chalk and Wire account at the GVSU Bookstore, you will receive a card containing login instructions.  In the winter 2014 semester Ally Rogers, a graduate student assistant dedicated to Chalk and Wire student support, will provide you with help, tips and ideas on how you can use Chalk and Wire e-portfolio. In addition to in-class training, Ally will also provide personalized online and phone support. You can reach Ally at 616-331-8009 or email her at libcw@gvsu.edu for further assistance.  The Liberal Studies Department will officially begin training in the winter 2014 semester.

Please remember, you will be able to design your own professional and personal portfolios separate from the Liberal Studies Assessment Portfolio. For example, you may use Chalk and Wire to design an electronic employment portfolio tailored to different internships and jobs for which you are applying. You can design portfolios to target a particular type of position or career path. I look forward to seeing all the dynamic and creative e-portfolios that Liberal Studies Students will design!

Sincerely,
Dr. Wendy A. Burns-Ardolino
Chair, Liberal Studies Department

What is Chalk and Wire (C&W)?

Chalk and Wire is a web based e-portfolio system required for all students in the GVSU Liberal Studies Department. You will purchase Chalk and Wire at the GVSU bookstore. This subscription will be active for four years from your first sign in date. You have the option to renew your account after this four year period. You will use Chalk and Wire to create your final portfolio during Capstone, including Program Wide Assignments in addition to assignments that are unique to your Area of Focus. You can also make separate e-portfolios using Chalk and Wire for career and other purposes.

What costs are associated with C&W?

The cost of Chalk and Wire is $110 for a four year subscription, or $54 for a one year subscription. The cost of the Chalk and Wire subscription is defrayed by using the same textbook for Interdisciplinary Research Methods and Capstone. All sections use Allen Repkos Interdisciplinary Research in both courses to allow for the fees that you will pay to cover the Chalk and Wire e-portfolio subscription.

     How do I purchase C&W?

Chalk and Wire is available through the University Bookstore. Subscriptions are listed under LIB 999 on the UBS shelf, but can also be requested from the help desk.

Why is Chalk and Wire required?

Chalk and Wire will be used to assess Program Wide Assignments that address the Liberal Studies program learning outcomes. The GVSU Chalk and Wire ePortfolio will document your performance on course assignments aligned with these outcomes. Program Wide Assignments will be identified in your course syllabus. Note: not all course assignments are Program Wide assignments.

How does Chalk and Wire work?

When you complete a "Program Wide" assignment in a course you will upload this assignment to your Assessment Portfolio (AP). Chalk and Wire will notify the assessor that the assignment is ready to be reviewed. The assessor will grade your Program Wide assignment using a rubric. All Program Wide assignments must be submitted through Chalk and Wire, but individual instructors may request that you turn it in electronically or in hard copy. At the end of your program you will have a complete portfolio of Program Wide assignments that document your academic and professional growth.

How do I begin using Chalk and Wire?

When you purchase your Chalk and Wire account at the GVSU Bookstore you will receive a card containing login instructions. Within two week your GVSU Program account should be populated with your Program Wide Assignments. You may access the Chalk and Wire site for Grand Valley State University by clicking here.

     Can I create other portfolios?

Yes. You can design your own portfolios separate from the GVSU Assessment Portfolio. For example you might use Chalk and Wire to design an electronic job portfolio. You can actually design portfolios to target a particular type of position or career path.
You can reach Ally by email at libcw@gvsu.edu for further assistance.

The Chalk and Wire website also offers a plethora of support via phone, email, chat, and tutorials, as well as onscreen assistance.

I am graduating in April 2014. Am I required to purchase C&W?

Exceptions to the Chalk and Wire ePortfolio will be made on a case by case basis. Please email libcw@gvsu.edu if you would like to request a waiver. Please include your name, G#, expected graduation date, and reason for requesting the waiver. You are strongly encouraged to purchase a subscription to Chalk and Wire. The ePortfolio software provides you with an opportunity to create unique portfolios that showcase your academic and professional growth and experience. Such portfolios can be used both personally and professionally as you desire.
