HIV/AIDS Certification Training (PED 380)

This course is designed for pre-service or certified teacher to complete the Michigan Department of Education requirements to provide HIV/AIDS education in a school setting.  Participants will receive a certificate from the Ottawa Area Intermediate School District upon completion of the course stating they are certified to teach HIV/AIDS in the State of Michigan.

Today’s teachers are faced with a large number of students with a wide variety of Physical, Emotional, Neurological and Psychological disabilities. Together we will explore a wide variety of disabilities and their impact upon brain growth & development, emotional development, and learning. Join us as we explore everything from the newest understandings about ADD, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, to Tourettes. You will leave with a new understanding of the disabilities along with practical ideas for successfully accommodating the impacted students in your classroom.

ED 601 08 Using Web 2.0 Applications in the  Classroom (3)

Web 2.0 applications allows for differentiation in the classroom, by allows students to share their knowledge in a variety of ways. This course will cover a variety of Web 2.0 applications, that also have counterparts on hand-held devices. The applications covered will allow students to write, create video, speak, and collaborate with others while demonstration their knowledge. Web 2.0 applications will include: Go Animate, Glogster, Padlet (Wallwisher), Animoto, MakeBeliefs, Voicethread, Socrative, and Comix and others.

The ability to record from your computer, having a microphone, will greatly enhance your use of the applications, knowing that all classrooms do not have microphones available one is not required. You will create an example using each of the applications, and for the conclusion of the course, design a lesson plan that incorporates the use of one of the applications integrated into instruction.
ED 601 09 Social Issues in Rural Education (3)

This course will begin with a history and some interesting facts and statistics about rural education. Once a foundation has been laid, specific social topics that affect rural communities and their schools will be discussed. Topics will include poverty and homelessness, diversity, substance abuse, and mental health.
