This course will focus primarily on sensory modulation and the impact it has on learning.  This “hands on” approach will give participants the opportunity to focus on classroom strategies and adaptations to accommodate children with sensory differences. Topics will include mainstreaming children with Autism Spectrum Disorders, ADHD, anxiety disorders and sensory modulation difficulties.

Learn to use the latest Internet tools, how to energize your classroom, and develop super charged lessons.  You will have the freedom to develop resources targeted to your needs. Beginner and veteran internet users are welcome. Both elementary and secondary levels will be addressed.

This learning experience explores the use of math workshop to promote hands-on, differentiated, and targeted instruction for diverse learners.  Participants will leave with numerous ideas, manipulatives, technology resources, and authentic strategies that align to the Common Core and will enhance any math program.

This class will explore the latest brain research and it’s practical implication in educational settings. New research is becoming available which has significant on how students process and retain information. Specifically you will learn how to create classrooms where your educational methodologies and teaching strategies promote the highest success for all students. This content is applicable to general education and special education teachers at all levels, and will provide the information and tools needed to bring your instructional effectiveness to the next level.

The topic of climate change will be explored in this interactive course.  The science and policy relating to current climate change issues will be highlighted as well as curriculum for the classroom including the new Michigan Environmental Education Curriculum Support (MEECS) Climate Change Unit.  Special attention will be given to developing units aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards.

ED 600 20 Poverty's Impact in the Classroom

The numbers of students living without vital resources has grown significantly in the past several years.  Poverty is the most identifiable outcome of lack of resources, but there are eight other resources that make a significant impact on student success.  Discussion, experience, active participation, and investigations will be the foundations of the two day class designed to provide teachers with a better understanding of the impact from the lack of resources and which interventions may prove to be the most effective.  Direct connection to common initiatives of Response to Intervention, Explicit Instruction, Differentiation, and Capturing Kids’ Hearts will help participants connect the information to pieces already in place in their professional lives. 
ED 600 21 Engaging Students with ASD Experience Success in School

The numbers of students with autism spectrum disorders in the general education setting continue to rise.  The challenge is not to know all of the answers, but be willing to ask difficult questions.  This workshop designed to help teachers investigate key components of an inclusive classroom and supports that lead to school success.  Discussion, experiences, active participation, and investigations will be the basis for a power-packed two days designed gain a fundamental understanding of ASD, educational strategies, and specific examples of how to include strategies within their classroom.  Based on experience with students on the spectrum, real-life scenarios, and a problem solving approach, participants can expect to gain knowledge, develop resources, and have the opportunity to pose questions and challenges for the workshop as well.

ED 600 19 Developmentally Appropriate Practices When It Comes to Implementing the Common Core Standards

This course will explore relevant information that teachers must know about research-based instructional practices that promote effective learning and the Common Core State Standards; child development and how our general knowledge about young children can allow for successful implementation of the Common Core State Standards in developmentally appropriate classrooms; and specific appropriate experiences for the young child that link to the Common Core State Standards.
