HIV/AIDS Certification Training (PED 380)

This course is designed for pre-service or certified teacher to complete the Michigan Department of Education requirements to provide HIV/AIDS education in a school setting.  Participants will receive a certificate from the Ottawa Area Intermediate School District upon completion of the course stating they are certified to teach HIV/AIDS in the State of Michigan.

In this one-credit course, learn how to teach and reinforce effective reading strategies, while increasing depth-of-knowledge in the content areas.
ED 600 03 Engaging Students with ASD Experience Success in School

The numbers of students with autism spectrum disorders in the general education setting continue to rise. The challenge is not to know all of the answers, but be willing to ask difficult questions. This workshop designed to help teachers investigate key components of an inclusive classroom and supports that lead to school success.  Discussion, experiences, active participation, and investigations will be the basis for a power-packed two days designed gain a fundamental understanding of ASD, educational strategies, and specific examples of how to include strategies within their classroom.  Based on experience with students on the spectrum, real-life scenarios, and a problem solving approach, participants can expect to gain knowledge, develop resources, and have the opportunity to pose questions and challenges for the workshop as well. 
ED 600 04 Using the Common Core to Build Mathematics Projects, Lessons & Resources

This is a hands-on working session intended for elementary, middle, and high school mathematics teachers. In this course we will learn how to build lessons, projects, and resources using the Common Core State Standards as the foundation for these learning activities. We will also learn how to incorporate technology, Project Based Learning, and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles to help differentiate instruction.

ED 600 05 Poverty's Impact in the Classroom

The numbers of students living without vital resources has grown significantly in the past several years.  Poverty is the most identifiable outcome of lack of resources, but there are eight other resources that make a significant impact on student success.  Discussion, experience, active participation, and investigations will be the foundations of the two day class designed to provide teachers with a better understanding of the impact from the lack of resources and which interventions may prove to be the most effective.  Direct connection to common initiatives of Response to Intervention, Explicit Instruction, Differentiation, and Capturing Kids’ Hearts will help participants connect the information to pieces already in place in their professional lives.

ED 600 06 Creating Strong Assessments for K-6th Grades

Creating assessments that truly match learning targets can be a challenge, but in this day of accountability, it is even more imperative that teachers learn how to accurately assess student learning. In this one-credit course, we will go beyond fill-in-the blank, true and false, and multiple choice tests and build assessments that more accurately reflect depth-of-knowledge and student understanding that the Common Core State Standards demand. Walk away with the knowledge to create assessments that align with state standards, objectives, lesson activities, and help improve content mastery.

Data is a necessary evil of teaching that is most often feared and misunderstood. Learn how to reframe your thinking about data analysis and use it to better your practice. In this one-credit course, learn to embrace data as a means to improve teaching and learning. We will explore sample data sets, perform analysis tasks to drive instruction for whole group instruction, and identify ways to target individual student intervention opportunities with technology. Walk away with useful skills and the tools to take your students’ learning to the next level. This course is geared towards elementary and middle school teachers.
ED 600 09 Teaching Children with Sensory Differences

This course will focus primarily on sensory modulation and the impact it has on learning.  This “hands on” approach will give participants the opportunity to focus on classroom strategies and adaptations to accommodate children with sensory differences. Topics will include mainstreaming children with Autism Spectrum Disorders, ADHD, anxiety disorders and sensory modulation difficulties.

This fun movement oriented class will explain basic facts about the brain that educators need to know to increase their effectiveness in the classroom.  The Top Ten Tips for creating brain friendly classroom environments will be presented so that you can make immediate changes to your classroom to enhance student learning. You will also come to understand the negative impact that stress has on your student’s ability to learn and how to utilize brain compatible strategies to improve their performance. You will learn specific movements that prepares your students brain and body for optimal learning in the areas of reading, writing, attention and motivation. Join us to learn ways to energize your students and increase their success in school.
ED 600 12 Bringing Professionals into the Classroom

This course is an opportunity to become familiar with the vast number of resources classroom teachers have available to help strengthen their writing curriculum.  This course takes a look at the Common Core Standard (W.5.6) “Use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing and to interact and collaborate with others” by Skyping with published authors.  Over the two-day course, we will explore ways that educators can discover authors who will virtually visit their classroom…often free of charge!  Videos of actual Skyping sessions from a fifth grade classroom with published authors will be shared.  This course will show you how to get your students ready and the easiest format for a virtual visit.  The experience of having students discuss their own writing with a published author is powerful.  Each day time will be given to research possible professionals to bring into your classroom. The course will also present ideas on bringing in local professionals to broaden students’ learning experiences in the areas of reading and writing. This course will explore ways to help you integrate “professionals” into your classroom and allow time for you to research and create you own list of resources.  Ideas will be given on where to look and how to go about searching for theses resources. Participants will collaborate to create a list of contacts/professional to bring into their own classrooms.
ED 600 13 Positive Behavioral Supports for K-8 Students

This course is designed to equip educators with proactive strategies for defining, teaching, and supporting appropriate student behaviors to create positive classroom environments.  This two day course will address causes of behavioral issues, techniques for minimizing negative behaviors, creating a culture of team building in the classroom and involving parents as partners in the education of their children.

Differentiated Instruction is an instructional concept that maximizes learning for ALL students—regardless of skill level or background. It's based on the fact that in a typical classroom, students vary in their academic abilities, learning styles, personalities, interests, background knowledge and experiences, and levels of motivation for learning. When a teacher differentiates instruction, he or she uses the best teaching practices and strategies to create different pathways that respond to the needs of diverse learners.  This course is designed to help meet the needs of diverse learners in your classroom.  We will discuss the key concepts of differentiated instruction and discover how to make it work in your classroom.
