Kasey Hartz Natural Area
The diversity of the wooded tract immediately north of the Muskegon Community College campus provides an ideal setting for an educational Natural Area.
A broad creek bed habitat is formed by Four Mile Creek as it makes its way to the Muskegon River. Variations in environmental factors on the slopes adjacent to the creek bed provide contrasting settings for studies of life forms and species. The upland aspect of the area supports an association of white pine, black and white oak. A nature trail has been developed in the southern part of the natural area. Most of the northern portion of the site remains undisturbed.
Although primarily for Muskegon Community College's Astronomy and Cosmology students, the Observatory hosts free public open houses at various times of the year.
The Observatory is located at the Muskegon County Wastewater System property, 8301 White Road. The facility can be best accessed by Muskegon travelers by turning north off Apple Avenue onto Maple Island Road, and driving approximately 2.1 miles. Turn right, or east, into the Wastewater Management System facility property and continue about 2.1 miles to MCC Observatory on the right side of the road.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO ATTEND GRAND VALLEY?
I started looking for other schools while I was attending Muskegon Community College and the Grand Valley/MCC partnership made it a great fit for me.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT GRAND VALLEY?
The Allendale campus is very convenient and I'm able to take night classes that fit into my schedule. I work days as a counselor at the Muskegon Correctional Facility.
HOW WILL GRAND VALLEY MEET YOUR FUTURE GOALS?
I hope to get my master's and then hopefully teach some day. My professors have been very encouraging.
HOW HAS GRAND VALLEYS FACULTY MADE A DIFFERENCE IN YOUR COLLEGE EXPERIENCE?
They're knowledgeable and I like the way they teach class. They're easy to communicate with. They enjoy their job and make me feel like I'm going in the right direction.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS?
Know what direction you want to go in instead of just going aimlessly. It'll save you from taking a lot of extra classes.
