Grand Valley State University’s Meijer Campus in Holland values sustainability and strives to continuously move toward more sustainable practices. 
 
What we’re currently doing….  
  • Creating a Green Team to address sustainability issues on campus
  • Providing recycling bins in all offices, classrooms, labs and study areas
  • Installing automatic dimming bulbs in lobby area, using energy efficient lighting and recycling old florescent bulbs
  • Adjusting heating and cooling according to occupancy
  • Utilizing a rain gauge in irrigation system (once 1/8 rain, no irrigation)
  • Ensuring environmentally friendly landscaping: chipping from downed trees, utilizing native Michigan plants
  • Switching to compostable utensils and plates and encouraging the use of glass/ceramic mugs
  • Ordering recycled office supplies, ordering in bulk to limit the amount of deliveries
  • Utilizing local caterers and vendors when possible
  • Supporting faculty and students to learn more about sustainability through local resources
  • Providing support for “paperless” courses
  • Participating in community events such as the Sustainability Film Series and The St. Patrick’s Day “Green” Parade
  • Carpooling to events
  • Developing and hosting “Calling All Green Teams” Sustainability Stewards Luncheon
  • Being involved in local and regional initiatives regarding environmental, economic and social justice
What we hope to do…
We recognize that sustainability is an ongoing commitment. We hope to become more sustainable by becoming more involved with the local community, exploring ways we can utilize the entire campus as a learning environment through more sustainable land management, increasing faculty and student involvement, exploring LEED-EB certification, and challenging ourselves to think about how our actions impact the environmental, economic, and social justice areas.
