The Mam People in Our Community, Mayan Languages and Cultures

The Mam are a Native American people in the western highlands of Guatemala and in south-western Mexico. In Pre-Columbian times, the Mam were part of the Mayan civilization. The Mam language is still spoken as a first language by many.

Come join us on November 10, to learn about the language, culture and Mayan experience from two Mam community members, Maria and Francisco de Pablo.

Professor Michael Vrooman (Modern Languages) will provide a talk on Maya languages as well, and the event will be moderated by Professor Andrew Schlewitz of Latin American Studies.

You will have the chance to try traditional tamales ('tamal') and coffee will be provided as well.

If you would like more information, please contact Dr. Zulema Moret @ moretz@gvsu.eduor call 616-331-3203.

Special thanks to the following sponsors: Latin American Studies, Modern Languages and Literatures, The College of Interdisciplinary Studies, The College of Liberal Arts and Studies and La Tertulia (GVSU Spanish Club)
