Why do I need good study skills?
Researchers have demonstrated that good study skills lead to improved classroom
performance on exams. By improving your study skills, you could improve your
grades, academic success and career goals.
Tips for improving
study skills:
- Find a place free of distractions and interruptions (like the library), and
set aside a specific time to study regularly.
- Study more difficult subjects when you are more alert.
- Most people lose their attention or focus after 50 minutes so take short
10- minute study breaks while studying to improve concentration.
- Read assignments, go to class, take notes and ask questions.
- Form a discussion or study group.
- Create study cards, or a concept map to analyze, compare, contrast, and summarize
main points.
- Take advantage of the resources available on campus through the Office of
Academic Support at 616-331-2490, including tutors, the Math Lab and Writing
Center.
Strategies for
better time management:
- Use a calendar or planner, and schedule your time- school, work and social
activities.
- Prioritize responsibilities.
- Do difficult tasks first or earlier in the day.
- Try to limit your work schedule to 20 hours or less per week; researchers
have shown that students that work more than that are five times more likely
to drop out.
