According to the U.S.
Department of Health and Human Services, the only “safe” or “responsible” use
of alcohol is moderation, which is defined as:
Men - a maximum of two
standard drinks per day
Women - a maximum of one standard drink per day
However, even moderate drinking may increase the risk of breast cancer and
can be dangerous to some individuals under certain circumstances.
Criteria for dangerous drinking behavior:
- Drinking if you are underage
- Drinking if you have certain health problems or are taking any medications
- Drinking if you are pregnant
- Drinking and driving
- Drinking to cope with depression or anxiety
- Drinking if you have a personal or family history of alcoholism
- Drinking as a game or to get drunk
- Drinking on an empty stomach
