High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is often referred to as
the “silent
killer” because it usually has no symptoms. Therefore, it is important
to have your blood pressure checked regularly. Blood pressure should normally
be less than 120/80 mm Hg for an adult. High blood pressure adds to the workload
of your heart and arteries, and can increase your risk of stroke, heart disease,
heart failure and kidney disease.
Here are some healthful tips to keep your blood pressure optimal:
- Exercise regularly
- Maintain a healthy body weight
- Eat a healthy diet low in sodium, and rich in vegetables, fruits, lean
meats, low-fat dairy products and whole grains
- Limit your alcohol intake
- Practice positive coping strategies for stress through exercise, humor,
meditation, etc.
