What is involved in choosing a career?
Since this will be one of the most important decisions you will make in your
life, take some time with it and make sure you do the necessary research involved.
Remember that the most important factor involved in choosing a career is to
find one that fits YOU. If you are unsure about the type of career you would
like, or if you would like to reaffirm your current career choice, consider
the following tips.
Steps in
choosing a career:
-Think about your values as they relate to a career. Do you want to work with
people? Make a lot of money? Have family time? Be in a competitive environment?
-Figure out what you like to do. Think about your hobbies and school subjects
you enjoy most.
-Consider having variety in your general education courses; you may discover
a new career field that you had not considered before.
-Take summer or part-time jobs, or internships that relate to your interests. “Try
out” careers that are in your general field of interest to see if you
like them.
-“Job-shadow” or spend some time with someone who is in a career
that interests you. People are usually very happy to spend some time with someone
interested in their career.
-Research your top choices. There are several free online career services where
you can check out various jobs, including responsibilities and requirements.
-See a career counselor - they are typically free for college students. Take
advantage of this service. Contact the Counseling and Career Development Center
at GVSU.
