As defined by the Arthritis Foundation, the terms “arthritis” and “rheumatic
disease” refer to more than 100 diseases that cause inflammation, pain,
and limited joint mobility throughout the body, and represent the number
one cause of physical disability in the United States.
If you have pain, stiffness or swelling in or around a joint for more than
two weeks, see your doctor to determine the cause. If you have already been
diagnosed with a form of arthritis, it is important to be proactive and work
with your doctor to get the right treatment.
Here are some tips to help you be good to your joints or prevent arthritis
flare-ups:
- Balance physical activity and rest.
- Maintain a healthy weight.
- Incorporate range of motion exercises, stretching, and strength training
into your program.
- Help protect your joints by learning the proper way to lift and carry things,
and wearing protective gear when playing sports.
- Stick with low or non-impact activities like swimming, water exercise and
biking.
