Student-Athlete Advisory Committee

The Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is an organization comprised of student-athletes from all varsity teams at GVSU. The goal of the committee is to inform all student-athletes, through their team representatives, of what is going on in the athletic department as well as campus-wide issues that directly affect student-athletes. The SAAC is made up of at least two representatives from each team. The committee meets once a month to discuss relevant issues, plan upcoming events, organize community projects, and to promote support amongst teams.
The SAAC has been responsible for originating programs such as Athletes Who Care (AWC), ensuring that all varsity team members (since 1999) who letter in their freshman year receive a varsity jacket, and re-designing the fourth year varsity letter blanket. The SAAC sends a representative to the GLIAC SAAC meeting each semester to discuss ideas with other schools in the conference.

Letter from 2022 SAAC President: Judith Essemiah
"We are in a unique situation as student athletes. We are apart of the general student population, but in many ways we aren’t. We navigate differently through our college career, which causes a huge gap between the student athletes and the general student population. With SAAC, we will try to not only close the gap, but help student athletes become active members of the GVSU community by working together with other campus organizations. We want to improve the student athlete experience at GVSU, by organizing events and meetings, but also by looking at the current structures that are in place for student athletes. The pandemic has revealed that the GVSU athletics department can improve the student athlete experience on so many things. Keeping the pandemic in mind, the mental health aspect of sport is something that keeps popping up in not only the media, but also within our own respective sport community. With Lakers Listen and the GV Anchors, we are doing much better than most universities, however just being “better” isn’t enough in the GV culture of excellence.
Our main goal as SAAC is to improve the student athlete experience, but we can’t do it alone. We need your input and comments to keep pushing for that excellence within the athletic department.
