Leadership Training and Community Documentation Internship: Winter 2014, SS14
(Part of a year-long partnership with the Cook Library, focused on Latino community and civil rights)
Opening for an undergraduate student interested in working with elementary and middle school students in inner city Grand Rapids to assist them as they document the history, culture, sights, and sounds of their Grandville Avenue community. In addition to documenting and preserving this valuable history before it is lost, the materials collected during the academic year will be used to create a radio program/audio documentary and multimedia exhibit over Summer 2014.
Position is 10 hours per week at $10 per hour and candidates should also be available on Thursday afternoons from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. in order to participate in the leadership training initiative at the Cook Library Center in Grand Rapids, Michigan. English and Spanish candidates preferred.
This is a wonderful opportunity for any student interested in immigration and/or Latino Studies, public history, education, community-based research, ethnography and oral history, archival and museum studies, sociology, anthropology, political science, communications, social work, non-profit management, among others.
Latino Experience and Public History: Winter 2014
Open to any students interested in public history, museum studies, library and archival work, community documentation, ethnography, oral history, Latino Studies, and/or local history. Students will receive training in best practices and research methods for archival digitization and oral history. They will work with faculty and community partners to assist local communities to document their history and collect their memories.
Translation/Transcription (Spanish-English): Winter 2014
Advanced Spanish students and/or bilingual students needed to transcribe oral histories and help to craft bilingual teaching, training, research, and exhibition materials as part of Latino history and community documentation efforts.
